• Limerick:

The limerick is a five-line poem that is usually humorous. The poem comprises a triplet and couplet, meaning three lines rhyme similarly, and the remaining two rhyme differently. Lines one, two, and five make up the triplet, while lines three and four make up the couplet.

• Sonnet:

The sonnet is typically comprised of fourteen lines in a strict rhyming scheme. There are two common rhyming patterns used in the sonnet:

1. The Italian pattern
2. The English pattern.

The Italian pattern is rhymed in abba abba cdcdcd, while the English pattern is rhymed abab cdcd efef gg.

• Ballad:

The ballad is the type of poetry most often associated with a song. The ballad often tells a story and has a chorus or refrain, usually repeated at the end of each stanza.

• Clerihew:

A clerihew poem is commonly referred to as a quatrain, which contains four lines of verse. The poem is usually biographical, with the poem’s subject in the first line and a rhyme pattern of aabb.

• Cinquain:

As its name suggests, the cinquain is a five-line poem with rules concerning the use of each line. The first line of the cinquain comprises one word, while the second line has two words that describe the first line.

The third line has three words used to show action, while the fourth consists of four words that convey the feeling. The fifth line and final line are usually two words that refer to the subject on line one.

• Acrostic:

This is a Greek term at the tip of the verse.’ It is a form of poetry in which the first letters of each line combine to spell a word that can be read vertically down the poem.

• Free Verse:

This form of poetry is written free from the proper rules about form, rhyme, rhythm, or meter that many other forms of poetry are bound by. This freedom of style allows the use of a great deal of imagination to express feelings or emotions about the chosen topic.
