Poetry Writing

Poetry, for some, is a joy, done for the sheer pleasure of putting beautiful words to paper. For others, it is a nightmare – something is done only because it is a requirement for a grade in an English or Literature course.

If you happen to fall into that second grouping, we can help. Whether you need help finishing or touching up a poem you are currently working on or need a custom poem to be written from scratch, our qualified professionals can meet your needs.

Our team has several years of combined experience in writing and reviewing several types of poetry.

Categories of Poetry

There are many types of poetry, and new forms continue to emerge regularly. Whatever particular style of poetry your assignment requires, our team will most likely provide you with the needed help.

The following is a short list of the most common forms of poetry, all of which our team has experience in writing.

  • Haiku:

This Japanese form of poetry is characterized by three lines, with a strict limit on the number of syllables used in each line. The pattern for the haiku poem is as follows:

  1. The first line has five syllables,
  2. The second has seven, and
  3. The third has five.
  • Limerick:

The limerick is a five-line poem that is usually humorous. The poem comprises a triplet and couplet, meaning three lines rhyme similarly, and the remaining two rhyme differently. Lines one, two, and five make up the triplet, while lines three and four make up the couplet.

  • Sonnet:

The sonnet is typically comprised of fourteen lines in a strict rhyming scheme. There are two common rhyming patterns used in the sonnet:

  1. The Italian pattern
  2. The English pattern.

The Italian pattern is rhymed in abba abba cdcdcd, while the English pattern is rhymed abab cdcd efef gg.

  • Ballad:

The ballad is the type of poetry most often associated with a song. The ballad often tells a story and has a chorus or refrain, usually repeated at the end of each stanza.

  • Clerihew:

A clerihew poem is commonly referred to as a quatrain, which contains four lines of verse. The poem is usually biographical, with the poem’s subject in the first line and a rhyme pattern of aabb.

  • Cinquain:

As its name suggests, the cinquain is a five-line poem with rules concerning the use of each line. The first line of the cinquain comprises one word, while the second line has two words that describe the first line.

The third line has three words used to show action, while the fourth consists of four words that convey the feeling. The fifth line and final line are usually two words that refer to the subject on line one.

  • Acrostic:

This is a Greek term at the tip of the verse.’ It is a form of poetry in which the first letters of each line combine to spell a word that can be read vertically down the poem.

  • Free Verse:

This form of poetry is written free from the proper rules about form, rhyme, rhythm, or meter that many other forms of poetry are bound by. This freedom of style allows the use of a great deal of imagination to express feelings or emotions about the chosen topic.
